The Republic of Estonia, together with the PAKRI Smart Industrial City, today appealed to Tesla to locate its Gigafactory in Estonia. The campaign was launched with a one-minute video drawing attention to cultural similarities between Tesla and Estonia: speed in the development and embrace of technology, and the eschewal of bureaucracy.

Similar videos have been produced in other European states, including France, Finland, and Lithuania. PAKRI Smart Industrial City’s CEO, Enn Laansoo, Jr., says the nations are advertising themselves as possible locations for the Gigafactory, since it’s known that Tesla is seriously considering building a factory outside the United States.

“Our main message is that if Tesla were a country it would probably be Estonia,” said Laansoo, who believes Estonia and the Tesla founders embrace a similar approach to problem solving. “Both would win by working together.” Laansoo adds that Estonia is one of the world’s most positively-disposed nations when it comes to electric automobiles, since the entire country is covered by a charging network, and the testing of self-driving cars has been legalized.

Laansoo says Estonia makes sense for Tesla both geographically and logistically, with all needed raw materials available in the region, plus the ability to get things done in a fast and professional manner. “We also have the ability to meet all of Tesla’s energy needs from PAKRI’s own renewable energy sources, which means Tesla could control 100 percent of its energy price.”

PAKRI Smart Industrial City has worked 10 years with businesses in fields similar to Tesla’s, says Laansoo. “And through this campaign we’d also like to gain the attention of others in the greentech field and bring them to PAKRI.”

“We’ll be satisfied if our campaign results in bringing new businesses to PAKRI, even if they happen to come from other regions in Estonia,” says Laansoo.

The campaign utilizes Brand Estonia’s branding toolbox, and is financed in equal parts by PAKRI Smart Industrial City and Enterprise Estonia through the KEN cluster. Tallinn Science Park Tehnopol, also part of this initiative, has partnered with PAKRI Smart Industrial City to advance Estonia’s green technology sector.
